Independent Study Course
 "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings Trilogy"  
​​(Ages 11+)

​This Independent Study (IS)  Literature/Art Courses are geared toward students who want to expand the breadth of their artistic talents as we dive into the world of “The Lord of the Rings”.  

Over the 2025-2026 school year (August - May), we will read each book in the respective series.  Each week (of the thirty weeks), students will be assigned a corresponding art project to enhance and to bring life and purpose to their reading!   The first semester focuses on a different art medium each week.  Students are encouraged to engage more deeply into an art medium of their choice for the second semester.  (That said, students may opt to use the materials of their choice for each lesson.) This is a true integrated project-based learning experience.  This is a true integrated project-based learning experience.  Students encourage each other as they share their responsive art projects with the class each week on the Padlet.  Students are motivated by knowing their artwork and explanations will be shared with their peers.

Over the years, Mrs. G's  Art/Literature courses have proven highly successful, fun, and motivating for art-minded students!

"I chose a bat because: I like to stay up at night, I've always wanted to fly, And I like the feeling of hanging upside down." - Emma

"It is a gold stick figure representing how I wish to be. The battery head and colorfulness in the picture represent how I want to be smarter and more creative. Also, the book background represents how I would like to be smarter for literature. The blue and purple pipe cleaners are supposed to look like Gandalf's hat, representing how I would like to be clever like him, or think like him." - Zahara

"I tried to include both elements of barrels and invisibility into it. My project is a suncatcher I made from a plastic water bottle, which is clear and looks invisible when placed against the right background. Also, I painted ( with watercolors) the scene of the barrels in the river, as the dwarfs and Bilbo are escaping from the Elvenking. Also, I included a purple dot to identify Bilbo, purple because the water was cold and that would make him turn purple, like having frostbite all over." - Zahara

​"The Hobbit" - Pages 233-287 - Respond Artistically to a Quote from the book.

"And sometimes pairs of yellow or red or green eyes would stare at him from a little distance" ( The Hobbit, Chapter VIII, Page 154) I responded to this quote by making eyes out of paper and placing them on top of the quote I wished to use. I also colored the paper eyes with a neon green highlighter so they would shine green when the blacklight hit them, that is actually the reason I only did the green eyes, so I could use the cool blacklight. After I took the picture I put a cartoon settings on it because I realized it made the eyes look closer like they were floating above the paper. Which makes a connection to the quote " from a little distance" I was going for the effect of making the quote come alive, having the glowing green eyes appear to be coming at the observer. ****** By Zahara

This is a drawing I did of Bilbo Baggins with a cup of tea. I looked through the pages assigned this week but couldn’t find any quotes, so I decided to look some up. I found this one and I imagined Bilbo back home in his hobbit hole serving tea and food to the dwarves who came to visit a while after their adventure. The treasure box in the corner shows the share of gold Bilbo got but he knows that other things are more important. -Elaina Miller

"This week for the final project of the hobbit, I freehand drew a map of the hobbit story. This map shows the entire world that the hobbit takes place in and shows some notable locations such as the misty mountains, Mirkwood forest, and the lonely mountain." *** By Liam

" For my final project I decided to draw Gandalf and Bilbo on an 18x24 paper. I also drew Gandalf making puffs of smoke that foresees the their future with the Elvish sword, the giant spiders, the ring, Bilbo's hobbit hole, and Smeagle. " - By 'Nicholas

The greatest life lesson from the book I feel was when we see each individual person go through their greedy phases and we see how terrible it really is to be greedy. I wanted to reflect something old from the beginning of the journey so to show how far the dwarfs and bilbo have come in their travels, so I used an old drawing I made from the beginning of the class, and I have it appear to be reflecting from a stone, also I made the stone both green and purple because I feel does colors best represent greed and envy. The stone is reflecting an image of Thorin because Thorin I feel was the best example of a greedy person in the book. To make the project, I drew on a small mirror the green and purple diamond shape then just simply pointed the mirror to the old drawing and took the picture. - By Zahara

​"Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring" - Chapter 1

I did this project because I love this part the most. I did the part where Bilbo had a birthday party and Gandolf came and set off a lot of cool fireworks. I drew a silhouette of Gandolf and Bilbo looking at the beautiful fireworks. and 5 different colored fireworks blue,yellow, pink, green, and orange. I also did a fadeing sky with black at the top and blue at the bottom to show that it's night. I tried to make stars by taking a small fan brush and lightly tapping it on my finger it didn't show up that well but it was worth a try. From Emma

This week I chose to draw the ring from the first chapter. My description is "For this chapter of the lord of the rings, I chose to draw the ring that will become very important over the next three books. This ring holds deep powers and history that Frodo and Bilbo will soon discover. The inscription on the ring reads “Ash nazg thrakatulûk agh Burzum-Ishi krimpatul or One ring to rule them all, One ring to find them, One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.” It is a very simple piece but is a very important part of the story. The red background represents its dark, evil background and powers that are hidden at first." - By Liam

I saw this while reading pages 1-44 in the first book of The Lord of the Rings. It is a quote that Bilbo said to Frodo: “you had better come and live here, Frodo my lad.” This quote isn’t super important but when I read it, I imagined Bilbo’s arm around Frodo, reassuring him as Frodo joined Bilbo as his family. I drew the art in pen and for the first time used color pencils. I don’t use color pencils that much so I decided to try it out. -Elaina Miller

"Hobbit Path" - By Roman

My project is of Gandalf's dragon which shoots fireworks at Bilbo's party. I first drew the dragon with colored pencils then used glitter to make the fireworks, I used glitter so that it would reflect off my light and shine like if it were a real firework. So that I could concentrate the light on the glitter I turned the lights off in my room and just had my closet light on, so the light came from just one direction and I could arrange my paper for it to just mostly shine on the glitter. After I took a picture of the drawing I messed with the settings so that the reflecting light looked pinkish like the reflection was from a real firework. Also, I purposely did not draw a pupil in the dragon's eye so that the fact that the dragon is not I real dragon but I statue of one would be known. The gray cloud hiding the neck of the dragon is supposed to be smoke from the fireworks. ********* By Zahara

"Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring" - Chapters 2-3

"For my project this week I did paper dolls in a boat to represent the part in chapter two where Gandolf is telling Frodo the story about the ring. So I made two paper dolls, one is Smeagol and the other one is Deagol. Then I took a stick from my backyard and tied a piece of string to it for the fishing pole. I took a ring and put it under the water, then I took my little sister's boat and the put fishing pole, Smeagol, and Deagol in the boat. Then I put it in a creek and took a picture of it. I did this project because I love fishing and Smeagol is my favorite character." - By Emma

"For this project I decided to draw the Nazgul, or first known as the Black Riders. Frodo and Sam have a close encounter with one and I wanted to draw what I thought they would look like. I used pencil and charcoal to make the look shadowy and creepy. I imagined the Rider with a long black "cape" with multiple tears and a horse that almost showed no sign of life; only walked where its master led it. The Nazgul are mysterious and creepy so that is why I went with pencil/charcoal for my medium." - By Elaina

"“This week I choose to draw the nightrider that we see in chapter 3. I really wanted to try and draw this on my iPad and I think it came out pretty well. The nightrider came to the town and bilbo decides to hide from the man. I drew this referencing a picture from the movie as well as what I imagined him as. I tried to draw him on a horse." - by Liam

"My inspiration for this project came from the quote " I really shall turn him into a toad" (page 64) This is when Gandalf jokes about turning Sam Gamgee ( a friend of Frodo's) into a toad so as to prevent him from telling everyone that Frodo is planning to leave. To make this project I went to an app on my computer that allows me to draw and paste pictures for art projects. I used a picture of a toad rather than trying to draw one, I also really liked the picture I found because I think the toad has a funny look of concern on its face which I find very amusing. Also, the app provided stickers of leaves and bark which I used to make my characters seem like they were in the forest. The best part about the project I feel is when I have Gandalf like he is laughing and walking away from Sam the toad ( that is if he were to turn him into a toad) The point of my project is to bring out the humorous possibility of Gandalf turning Sam into a toad then he laughs and walks away leaving Sam stuck in a toads body. Which is a thought I find very funny. " - By Zahara

​"Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring" - Chapters 3-7

I did this project because I like the Black Rider and because black is my favorite color. I did a Black Rider silhouette with a pencil and then colored it in with a permanent marker so that I could see it when I painted on top of it. To do the back around I put one big blob of four different colored paints yellow, light blue, dark blue, and black, and then blended them together to make it look like a sunset. Then by copying what I drew underneath with a pencil I painted on top a Black Rider. by Emma

"This is the song that Frodo sang when he was resting under a tree, at the time he was overheard. The title is in Elvin script which is translated to a title I made up “A Song of Procrastination” because it was sung when they were unnecessarily resting, and putting off the long trip ahead of them. Fun Fact: Did you know Tolkien made an entirely new language? The only fantasy author ever to have made a whole language for their story!" - By Sophia

"My project is of the drink the Elves gave Frodo and his friends, "They found that the Elves had filled their bottles with a clear drink, pale golden in colour: it had the scent of a honey made of many flowers, and was wonderfully refreshing."(page 88) The idea that it was a drink that consisted of the elements of gold, honey, and flowers seemed pretty to me. I thought the drink sounded like it would be a very beautiful drink, not to necessarily drink but look at, for ornamental purposes. I made my project by mixing red and yellow food coloring in water for the actual drink to look like a golden honey color. Then I made the flower out of tissue paper, the leaves I pulled from a bush in my yard wanting to make the flower look as realistic as possible with the real leaf. I also took the picture of my project outside to add to the fact that the flower was meant to look like a real flower." - By Zahara

​"Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring" - Chapters 8-10

"Tom Bombadil, " For each of the hobbits he chose a dagger, long, leaf-shaped, and keen, of marvelous workmanship, damasked with serpent-forms in red and gold. They gleamed as he drew them from their black sheaths, wrought of some strange metal, light and strong, and set with many fiery stones. Whether by some virtue in these sheaths or because of the spell that lay on the mound, the blades seemed untouched by time, unrusted, sharp, glittering in the sun" (page 142) I decided to draw with a pencil, Tom's daggers, which he gave to Frodo, Merry, Pippen, and Sam. I drew four, one for each hobbit. I thought they sounded cool with the details of snakes and jewels. I also made sure to include the detail of their leaf-shaped blades." ----------- By Zahara

"This is a drawing of when Frodo and Sam visit that cave in chapter 8. And there is demonic singing coming from the cave." - by Roman

"For my project I made the letter that Gandolf sent to Frodo. How I made it is I took an envelope and covered it with mud, then I let it sit for five minutes, then I rinsed it off under cold water and let it dry. After it dried I took a red crayon and melted it on the paper, and stuck a penny in it to make it look like a seal. To make the letter I took a paint brush and wiped a little mud on it, then I wrote some of the words that Gandolf sent Frodo on it."--------- By Emma

"This week due to the cold weather my family lit a fire every day. For the Lord of the Rings assignment I decided to sandpaper a piece of firewood into a semi flat surface and use the ashes left over in the fireplace to draw the hobbit's lost horses. I sketched the horses out beforehand and used the ashes as a shading blend with the vine charcoal. " - By Nicholas

"For my last project of The Fellowship of the Ring - Book 1, I drew Gandalf, Sam, Frodo, Aragorn, and Legolas. I didn’t have my regular sketchbook with me so I decided to draw the characters in my schoolwork notebook. Gandalf and the Hobbits are on their journey while Aargorn and Legolas are fighting and defending them. I used a quote from J.R.R. Tolkien for the art project and it is my favorite quote from the author." -Elaina Miller

"My project is of the herb Strider gave Frodo after he was wounded. I made sure to include all the facts of the herb into the poem, also I tied to draw the plant the way it was described in the book. Including its strong scent and long leaves, also it's great healing powers." - By Zahara

​​​"Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring" - Book 2 - Chapters 3-4 

My inspiration for my project came from the quote "Good night! I'll take a walk, I think, and look at the stars of Elbereth in the garden. Sleep well!" To create my project I first needed to have a background of stars, to make my stars I got an old knitted glove and lightly stretched it over a flashlight so to get the look of a million little lights through the stitches. I then had the picture of my stars on my computer. With scissors, I lightly scraped pink and purple chalk on my glove and clipped the white plastic flower to it, and then placed it under the star background. I then hung my flashlight over the flower to make it appear to have moonlight over it. Once everything was in place I turned the lights off in my room and took the picture. - By Zahara

"Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring" - Book 2 - Chapters 5-6

I call this piece, The Friends Ship Bracelet. The reason is, the overall goal of my project was to capture Frodo and Sam's good friendship. The best example of their companionship in the book involves a boat, a rowboat, which Frodo had first planned to use to leave, alone, for Mordor, but Sam then insisted that he come along to help him. To create my project, I first made the bracelet part out of a plastic water bottle, the rowboat with Sam and Frodo on it I drew on a piece of paper (with colored pencils and sharpies) which, I cut out and then glued to the back of the bracelet. ( I mention this because I realize that in the picture, the boat looks like it is on the outside of the bracelet, but it's not, it's just the little bit of shadowing I did with a blue sharpie under the boat). Once the glue was dry, I then painted the inside part of the bracelet with watercolors to create the river Sam and Frodo sailed on to Mordor. - By Zahara

This week I chose to draw the book fire scene from the "Lord of the Rings". My caption is“This week I decided to do a similar theme to last week’s project with a book. For this project, I took one of the older books I had lying around and try to make it so that fire came out of the center. What ended up happening which I personally thought was cooler was the whole book caught on fire and I got some really cool shots of the book engulfed in flames. I also had a lot more time to mess around with the settings on the camera this week and I think that also helped to make it look even better. By Liam

"Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring" - Book 2 - Chapters 7 -8

"For my project I made a orc helmet. so how I did it was I took a toy helmet and painted a hand print on it, then I took an arrow and painted the tip to make it look like feathers, and put fake blood on the arrow, then I stuck the arrow through the helmet, to make it look like a orc's helmet after getting shot." For my project, I wanted to include the elements of paths to signify( what I feel is) the most prominent characteristic of the book, that being journeys. After all, they have all been on one epic journey the entire book. Me choosing to draw on my hand was just a way I felt signified the ring, which does go on a hand. I even found a little golden ring of my own to put on my hand for the project. On my hand, I drew a path with two different directions, one with the eye that haunts Frodo and red swirls, which are for presenting chaos. While the other direction is decorated with flowers, illustrating what the hobbits find most pleasant, which is gardening. Emphasizing and signifying what the hobbits consider propitious, and also including the negative aspects they have experienced on their long-lasting journey." - Zahara

"For my project this week, I wanted to capture the grievance of how Boromir has died. Also, all the grieving and worrying Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli have expressed while in concern for the safety of the missing hobbits. To represent his death, I made a candle, which is a common symbol of death. Then I have a drawing of Boromir's funeral boat as decoration on the candle. To make the candle, the top part of it is a small water bottle rim, which I cut, and then sealed the bottom to then melt a birthday candle over it, making a very short miniature candle. That I then placed on top of a pillar I made out of cardboard (I used thin cardboard from a cereal box). Next, I wrapped the cardboard candle with white paper and then glued the drawing (I made with colored pencils) onto the candle." - By Zahara

" I drew the characters Legolas, Aragorn, and Gimli. I drew with a black pen outline and shaded with pencil. I then cut the characters out and took a photo of them placed outside. The three characters are looking for Pippin and Merry; Aragorn is looking for a lead in the tracks while Legolas is using his keen eyesight to look in the distance." - By Eliana

​​"Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers" - Book 3 - Chapters 4-5

"I took pictures of trees and thought about what type of ent, or what personality the trees would have. The first is and olive tree and I think the personality would be very delicate and laughing and just a little bit vain, possibly because olive’s have been very well celebrated in Greece. The second is a fir tree, or fir tree’s, I think these tree’s are what would be and ent, and an ent wife standing together. Very dignified and sturdy, and sort of looking as if they had their arms/branches around each other, I also think they would have been one of the sleepy trees. The third is a maple tree, and is very tall and willowy, with leaves like tufts of hair around the edges. And would probably be a young and quick (for ents)." - Sophia

"I decided to "play with light" in photography. The light through the trees is similar to what I imagine when Merry and Pipin see the light in Faghorn Forest. I did a little bit of editing to the photos and they are a little blurry sense I took them on my phone, but I think it works well with this project." - By Elaina

"This week I wanted to create an Entmoot. I made my Entmoot look like the old country singer Kenny Rogers. I chose to make him look like Kenny Rogers because Kenny Rogers (in fact) did not become very famous until a little later in his life, so everybody who knows of him is mostly familiar with his old, aged face. Kenny Rogers also has that nice beard (I feel) that makes him look wise. These all being common physical characteristics of the Entmoot, I perceived I would gain a more legitimate-looking Ent by using Kenny Rogers as a basis for its face. I used a pencil to draw my Ent, but when I took a picture of it, I realized you couldn't (really) see the lines and shadowing of his face very well. So I played with various filters on the phone to emphasize the shadowing and details trying to make his face look more realistic and have volume." - by Zahara

"I used tin foil and chipboard for the knife, and I crocheted yarn to make rope. It is for the part of the story when Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas find the rope that Pippin was bound in, and the knife he used to cut the rope." - Claudia

"This is the part in LOTR where Gandolf and the others visit the sick king. I made Gandolf, Gimly, Legolas, soldiers, and the king who I smudged a little bit to show how sick he is." - By Roman

​"Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers" - Book 3 - Chapters 6-8

" This week for my project, I made a meme. The meme is supposed to reflect the humor in Legolas Gimli and Aragorn's reunion with Gandalf, between pages 95-99 The Two Towers. When the trio reunites with Gandalf, at first, Gandalf is unsure of his name. But he quickly comes to realize that Gandalf is, in fact, his name. The meme points out how Gandalf isn't sure of his name but in an amusing way. To make the meme, I went on Pinterest and found a variety of pictures of the trio from the LOTR movies. I then put the ones I found appropriate for the purpose together using an app I have on my computer and made it into a meme. I also added a copyright statement towards the lower-left corner of the meme, making it look as professional and legal as possible." - By Zahara

"I decided for this week I wanted to create a Hydrosphere Staff. I looked up staff designs online and came across this one which I redrew using graphite and colored in with pastels. I then added a sunset on the ocean type background." - By Nicholas

"Since chapter 7 of LOTR has a lot of fighting and battles, I sewes together an axe and a sword. I made them with felt and fleece, and the sword has a sheath made of aluminum foil." - Roman

"This is a sword. I made it out of card board and aluminum foil and I used a pen to make the pattern. I named it Agony because agony is one of the feelings you get when your stabbed, and in the book they named their weapons." - By Emma

"For this week I drew the walls and fortess of Helms Deep. I imagined a big fortress with two walls: the outter wall lower and somewhat like a tower for the bowsmen and archers to stand and fight battles from there. The second wall I imagined it taller than the outter wall, securing the fortress if the first wall came down. I also thought of holes in the wall where archers could shoot from but still have cover from the enemy." -Elaina

​"Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers" - Book 3 Chapter 8 - Book 4 Chapter 2

"For the two week project I drew the black rider and the nazgul. Gollum hides when he sees the nazgul flying in the sky. The black riders are looking for the ring and calling out to it. Because the black riders and nazgul are very mysterious and haunting creatures I shaded the nazgul with black marker and crosshatched the black rider with marker and pencil. The blue patch is the sky and the orange eye adds a little bit of color. I went with a poster style for this project and mixed two different art styles." - Elaina

"I sculpted Gandolf and Sauron out of air dry clay after the reading. I then painted them with acrylic paint. I made Gandolf's cape purple, and Sauron's beard has some gray hairs." - by Roman

"For my project this time, I decided to try to make a video/presentation of my drawings. I first made my drawings from pencil, and then I drew color into them using a drawing app on my computer, then I made them into my video presentation, narrating with poems. Gollum is a bitter and evil person. Pippin, as Gandalf had said is a good person, though rather foolish at times. And Gandalf himself is an incredible person but, of course, does have his little temper. I found it interesting, how as you read through these chapters from the book, it is easy to label the quality of each character just simply in your head by observing their small actions, which is what I wished to point out in my presentation. ​" - By Zahara

"In a group project, Elaina, Nick, and Zahara all drew characters and then put them together in a scene, the scene of the trio at the gates of Mordor. Elaina drew Frodo, the hobbit to the right (closes to the gates of Mordor). Nick drew Gollum, additionally, using pastels for the blue eyes. Zahara drew Sam, the hobbit in the corner. Zahara also used a picture of Mordor from the movie and blended it with the scene with our characters using digital art." -

"This week for my project, I drew, with oil pastels, a staircase to Heaven, then quoted from the book, adding some of my own words to make a poem. My inspiration for this particular project came from when Sam said to Frodo, "Don't go where I can't follow," ( J.R.R. Tolkien, 340) he happened to say this when he thought Frodo was dying, this making me assume Sam would, or could be referring to Heaven. I used a pencil, before using the pastels, to outline the stairs, clouds, and the gate. Because oil pastels are so messy and bold in coloring, I could not attain a nice, clean white color for my Heaven drawing, so I took a picture of my drawing and then sent it to my computer to whiten some spots with a digital art app." - Zahara

"I decided to draw the two towers because the theme fitted well with the end of the book as well as the book's name. the one on the right is the Orthanc Tower and the one on the left is the Cirith Ungol Tower. I drew the towers using charcoal. " - By Nicholas

"For this week's project I drew Frodo, Sam, and Gollum. They are on their way to Mordor, and gollum does not like Sam so I drew Gollum sneaking behind Sam. I decided to do a slightly different art style and draw them more cartoonish. The drawing is in lead pencil." - by Eliana

"This week I decided to let the very first two pages of the book, The Return of the King, influence my project. On page one Pippin wakes from a nap, and on the second page, Gandalf insists he goes back to sleep and not to worry, where Pippin then replies, " you do not comfort me," and then goes back to sleep and has a dream. Finding this amusing, I made a dream catcher, also because we had to weave something this week, I weaved the dream catcher net. When I took pictures of the dream catcher I ended up taking many pictures that I liked, so I then just decided to make it into a video, so I could incorporate all the pictures." - By Zahara

"This week I decided to attempt to use pastels and make a fine art style of Frodo. As you can see there is something not quite right. I think the eyes are too high on his head and should be brought down so that he could have less cheek and more forehead. At least he looks more like a Hobbit than a Human." - By Nicholas

"I took a banana and shaped it into a finger, stuck a piece of cereal on the tip for a finger nail, put a ring on the banana finger, and put jelly on the end for blood. :)" - By Emma

"I didn't make it to last class but one of the options for a submission idea was to create falling kitchenware which I thought was simply too funny not to do. I used Photopea.com in order to create a graphics Interchange Format, or more commonly known as a GIF. I drew the kitchen supplies and copied and pasted.
