We took the trip of a life time and drove from Virginia to South Dakota for my oldest son's wedding! Welcome to the family, Alicia! On the way, we visited may of the "Little House on the Prairie" sites, "The House on the Rock" and Talesian, Sioux Falls and their "Butterfly Garden", and many other sites along the way. We had a blast in Western South Dakota when we visited: Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Memorial, Bear Country, Custer Park, a Gold Mine, the Black Hills and a 1880s train and town! I took so many photos that I can't wait to share but school starts soon and work comes first:).

Degas - Painter of Ballerinas , by Susan Goldman Rubin, shares the story of Degas's life and work through photos of his paintings, descriptions and direct quotes from Degas himself. Degas strayed from the expectations of his family. Instead of taking the path to become a lawyer to please his father, he embraced the challenges of a career as an artist. He was infatuated by the world of dance and spent the greater part of his life around dancers. His connection with the dancers centered around the respect that he had for artists in general. His commitment to his art and his dedication to his work is presented quite well in the story. Opinion: BEAUTIFUL! From the ribbon detail in the binding of this book, the specifically chosen fonts, photos and detailed descriptions, to the short bibliography, author's notes, glossary, where to see his work, and acknowledgements, Susan Goldman Rubin has presented an incredibly well-written biography with as much care for detail as her subject had for his. Degas - Painter of Ballerinas brings the story full circle. I am excited to share this book with all of my arts students. Degas - Painter of Ballerinas is appropriate for all ages. This video, "Curiosity Time" is one that I am excited to incorporate in my homeschool day. (We kind of do this naturally, but a focused time of even fifteen minutes a day of asking our children to write down all the questions they have on a given topic followed by some time to guide them to find the answers to the most prioritized answers...)
What a fabulous idea!! So easy! I imagine that my children will look forward to "Curiosity Time" being put on our schedule this year and that they will learn more in that 45 minutes than if we used the time to read them yet another lesson that doesn't keep their interest.. (Not that I am against reading together.. we'll keep doing that too:). Studying Architecture and the Arts supports the premise of the movie "Most Likely to Succeed" - "Project based learning motivates students and has great rewards." The movie is FANTASTIC! (From my perspective, it supports the way that many of us homeschool our children.) Giving a purpose for their studies inspires greatness.
For instance: An architecture project can entice students to dig deeper into history, construction, literature, drawing, writing, speech (presenting) and many more topics. An architecture project can be the purposed focus of any interest. A theater production gives rise to memorizing lines, creating sets, choreographing, editing music, writing and more. Learning to play the piano can be a subliminal study of shapes, patterns and organization as well as and appreciation for the beauty of the music. Learning to write and writing creatively helps students develop a tool to share information. (Priceless). One purpose of "Art" is a highly debated topic. For me creating art provides a connection with the heart of our Creator and a solid platform for sharing some of the most intimate emotions in a safe environment. These are just examples, but using the Arts to support any educational course can even give the most challenging core type courses purpose. Taking courses to learn the tools that the artistic mediums provide is absolutely necessary for students today as there is a new shift towards a desire for workers with huge creative platforms. In the long run, these courses are priceless for the students of this century. For me, this movie sums up a lot of how I teach and how coach students to be come the best version of themselves possible.. For the summer, "Most Likely to Succeed" is FREE to watch on Amazon Prime! I encourage you to watch it and get INSPIRED! |
