About Your Instructor
Hi! Mrs. G here.
So, you want to know a little about me?
My incredible husband and I have been homeschooling our nine children, for over 18 years! We've tried many curricula for many types of students. One is all auditory while another is 110% kinetic. Their variety certainly broadens our spectrum. If you would like any input on a particular curricula, one of us probably has an opinion. Our oldest son is a college senior. Our oldest daughter is a college sophomore, a full time vet-tech and is just barely 17! - (O.K. I am claiming mom's bragging rights on this one:). The six in the middle are my artistic thespians as well as our youngest, who is five and half lives and breaths "outside the box". She keeps us on our toes!
I graduated from The Ohio State University (Go Bucks!) with a B.S. in Architecture in the 1990s. For two and half years, I pursued a Master’s of Theological Studies with a concentration in Liturgical Architecture. Competitive in the academic and professional architectural settings, I entered quite a few architectural competitions. I tied for first place in a Vet Hospital Design Competition. :)! After graduating from college, I worked in two major architecture firms and as a freelance designer. I began teaching architecture to high school and homeschool students in 2009 when I created the company Building Brilliant Minds Online. Since then, my business has grown to include the many areas of “The Arts” in which I have excelled. I have been teaching architecture, art, photography, theater, piano, writing and dance to students from around the world for almost ten years. “Architecture” continues to hold my heart because designing space is a huge aspect of each of the “Arts” and the learning and experiential possibilities are endless! Giving students the opportunity to explore the world of “architecture” from the foundation up is a gift that “Builds Brilliant Minds”.
So why a "School of the Arts"?
My response to the gifts God has given me over the years!
It is just what I was created to do.
Other Experience in the Arts
Entrenched in the field of photography during my late high school and early college days, I earned money for books and entertainment taking photos and developing negatives. I miss my darkroom days!
Music has always been on my schedule. Piano is my favorite, yet from the age of 12, I played the organ for our church weekly until after I graduated from college. In my search as to how to teach my children to play, I learned about Simply Music! Hands down.. best "learn to play piano" method EVER! I have never been so exited to teach music. It is all play based (not reading based) and WOW.. the results.... AMAZING! Additionally, Play-a-Story's method of teaching improvisation and connecting music with art and film is right up my alley!
As a registered teacher for the Institute of Excellence in Writing, I have been blessed to help even the most reluctant writing students thrive. So rewarding for all!
From the time I was four until I graduated high school, I was devoted to a dance program. For seven years, I danced in a ballet/jazz dance company, on a scholarship. The seven years before that I prepared to dance in the company. (Funny.. sounds like the story of "Joseph".. I might have to think that one through later:). We used to perform every Friday in the schools. I developed a reputation for "dancing and musical architecture" because of the directions I took with college architectural design challenges. Despite the grumbling of my children, I still love to dance (even when out and about)! I just can't help it!
It wasn't until after high school that I stepped into the theatrical world. I've been directing children's musicals since 1990 (yes, I am that old.. almost 50!) I also designed sets, ran lights and music for various companies in my area at the time. Over the past seven years, I have directed homeschooled kids in musicals including: "The Enchanted Journey", "Willy Wonka", the "Wizard of Oz", "Annie Jr" and "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Dreamcoat". Working with this troupe has been a dream come true! Some of them have been in my musicals since 2010. Watching them grow up has been a huge blessing!
Although it isn't directly one of the "Arts", i am a certified health coach. To me, being healthy makes participation in the "arts" so much more fun! The energy that comes from making healthy choices is priceless for artists of all mediums.
Blessed with direct experience with Architecture, Art, Design, Theater, Music, Dance, Photography, and Writing I have been teaching my children, children in person and many students online from around the world many mediums of "The Arts". Bringing it all together for students and providing them some of the tools which they will need for any of the design fields is one of my greatest joys.
Most importantly, I thrive on using my artistic talents to bring Glory to Our Father in Heaven and teaching others how to do so as well.
To HIM be the Glory!
