February 2021 - "Odes to Our Maternal Heritages"
"For this month's assignment I had my mother do one of those Ancestry boxes that you can order from Ancestry.com. According to DNA, my mother's heritage breaks down along these lines, United Kingdom: 70% Germany: 21% Netherlands: 6% Africa 3%. No matter which place her family was from they all traveled to America on boats similar to this." - Nicholas
"This is based on the National Forum of Music in Wroclaw, Poland. My great-grandmother on my mother's side was born in Poland. " - Ronan
"For this month I decided to draw a map of Germany (my mother is mostly German). The map includes several famous landmarks and symbols of Germany." - By. Anna

"Here is my art project. My mom is French-Irish and I chose to focus on the Irish side of her heritage. The Irish are catholic and wrote a lot of illuminated manuscripts, so I chose to do the illuminated letter of my last name with a a catholic then, Christmas. Jesus is wearing blue as a symbol of hope. The blue flowers on the letter are irises, also a symbol for hope. The pink flowers are dogwoods, the state flower of North Carolina, where most of my family spent a majority of their lives. Traditionally, the dogwood is also the type of tree that Jesus died on. The red flowers are poinsettias, representative of the sacrifice of Christ, also the traditional flower for Christmas. Around the boarder are drummer boys, donkeys, wise men with their camels, and shepherds with their sheep. There are angels proclaiming the birth of Christ to the world on the top of the letter. Overall, my goal with this letter was to show that Jesus is ever-present in the lives of my family, and is the hope of our world." - Olivia

This month I was assigned to connect my country to my artwork and I have decided to use the 50 state birds as my project. I drew each state bird this month. Many states have the same bird as others and to keep myself from drawing duplicates I have written down all the state names over the birds that fit them.

October - Studies Where We Come From - "Plates for our States"
"I chose to make my license plate a sunset next to the ocean because Florida is known as the peninsula state. With water surrounding three of the four sides of the state boundaries I thought that it would only make sense to include that in my plate design." By Nicholas

"The reason this project connected with my life is because of the pump-jack in the background
is because my dad used to work at an oil and gas company. It started when we moved to Texas. Ever since, my family has been in the oil and gas work."

For my license plate design, I chose to do a take on the old design, but added the white border, the IN GOD WE TRUST text, and the California Poppies. I also changed the font and size of the actual license plate number text, and some other details. - By Joseph

"Since I live in Colorado and it is the Jubilee Year of Pope Saint John Paul II, I decided to do something related to Catholicism and Colorado. I chose Pope Saint John Paul II to relate to Colorado because I have been told that when he came to Denver in 1993 he said that Denver would be the new center for evangelization. I chose mountains to relate to the Rockies and in the center is Golgotha, the mountain that Jesus Christ died on. There are three crosses on Golgotha, the center cross being the type of crucifix that Pope Saint John Paul II carried with him. On the bottom of the license plate it says Catholic Colorado. I can relate to this project because I am a Catholic who not only lives in Colorado, but also loves Colorado. " - by Olivia

I took inspiration from one of Frank Stella's sculptures, a retrospective, which to me looked like it contained musical instruments. So, for my project I took it a step away from the abstract shapes, making instruments that were easier to identify, including, a piano guitar (which is close to an exact replica of one of the pieces in Frank Stella's creation), notes, and sheet music. - by Anna

Art Honor Society Projects - 2016-2017
Hi, Mrs G. I have completed all of my service hours for the two honor societies. I actually ended up doing 30 hours. Some of that was helping do craft projects with preschoolers (3.5 hours). The other 27 hours were in creating art and selling it to benefit a family who is adopting an older child from China. I ended up making $155 and I just sent that to them. I have included the drawings I sold just so you could see them. Thank you for the opportunity to be part of these honor societies. It felt really good to be able to help people with my gifts. Sometime over the summer I am thinking about signing up for one of your Advanced Architecture classes. I am leaning towards City Planning.
