Degas - Painter of Ballerinas , by Susan Goldman Rubin, shares the story of Degas's life and work through photos of his paintings, descriptions and direct quotes from Degas himself. Degas strayed from the expectations of his family. Instead of taking the path to become a lawyer to please his father, he embraced the challenges of a career as an artist. He was infatuated by the world of dance and spent the greater part of his life around dancers. His connection with the dancers centered around the respect that he had for artists in general. His commitment to his art and his dedication to his work is presented quite well in the story.
Opinion: BEAUTIFUL! From the ribbon detail in the binding of this book, the specifically chosen fonts, photos and detailed descriptions, to the short bibliography, author's notes, glossary, where to see his work, and acknowledgements, Susan Goldman Rubin has presented an incredibly well-written biography with as much care for detail as her subject had for his. Degas - Painter of Ballerinas brings the story full circle. I am excited to share this book with all of my arts students. Degas - Painter of Ballerinas is appropriate for all ages.
