My children and I are thoroughly enjoying "Intro to Filmmaking" by FILM SCHOOL FOR TEENS! We are about half way through the course and WOW! We've learned a bunch! We'v been watching most of the suggested movies as a family over the weekends. On Mondays, my kiddos are excited to watch the next video lesson and the movie reviews! (Some of the movies are not appropriate for my younger children, but we've added a special movie for them to make it work;). The movie reviews are excellent. Damon really helps students see beyond the "entertainment". The ability to find meaning and take away truths form a story is best taught in a variety of ways. The "Intro to Filmmaking" experience could be equivalent to (or would definitely enhance) a "Literary Analysis" course, or a creative writing course. This could perhaps be one of the most fabulous project based integrated learning courses yet! (Building Brilliant Minds Courses fit in that category too - of course:). Damon shares the tools of movie making in the first half of the course. That part sometimes seems slow (in regards to we're not out shooting movies right way), but it is so necessary and he makes it FUN! It reminds me of "Introduction to Architecture" in that the first few lessons gives students the tools before the final lessons which allow them to use the tools to design a specified project. We are just getting started with the last half of the course and are anticipating and excited for the film assignment in our next lesson. I'll update again in the next few weeks. This course has gone above and beyond my expectations! I encourage you to try it out with your teens or with a group of teens. Smiles, Mrs. G.
